International Day of Older Persons 2025
Today, 1 October, is the International Day of Older Persons, a day set aside each year to recognise the important role older people play in shaping our communities, families, and futures. This year’s United Nations theme is: “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being, Our Rights.”
It’s a reminder that getting older isn’t about stepping back from life – it’s about continuing to grow, share knowledge, and stay connected. Older people bring with them wisdom, resilience, and lived experience that benefit us all, and they deserve environments that support their independence and dignity.
Here are a few reflections that connect strongly with what we do every day:
- Homes that support independence – With thoughtful property modifications like ramps, wider doorways, accessible bathrooms, and step-free access, a home becomes a place of freedom rather than limitation.
 - Technology that bridges gaps – Assistive technologies, from fall-detection devices to smart home systems and mobility aids, give older people the tools to stay safe, connected, and in control of their daily lives.
 - The value of lived experience – Listening to older community members helps us design better, more inclusive spaces and services. Their voices guide us towards solutions that work for everyone, not just one generation.
 - Inclusion through design – Accessibility isn’t about “special” modifications, it’s about creating environments where people of all ages and abilities can participate fully.

We see this day as an opportunity to pause and celebrate the older people we work with and the difference they make in our lives and communities. Supporting independence through home and property modifications, assistive technologies, and ongoing care aligns directly with our values of inclusion, dignity, and respect.
We are privileged to play a small part in helping older Australians continue to thrive in the places they call home. Their stories, their contributions, and their determination inspire us to keep building spaces that empower, not restrict.
On this International Day of Older Persons, we thank those who share their lives, wisdom, and journeys with us. You continue to show that ageing is not about limits but about the possibilities for independence, contribution, and connection.
