I had contacted Eximm to request a quote for a new alarm system in my home. I was told by two previous companies the existing alarm no longer worked and needed a new system. The technician had a look and tested and suggested he could fix the existing alarm if I wanted him too. I was sceptical he could but he worked his magic and had it up and running with a few new pieces installed. He also set up partial alarming downstairs. A great bloke and also saved me a lot of money. Much appreciated for his honesty and professionalism as he could’ve just done what the others did and tried to sell me a new system. Recommend these guys for home alarm systems repairs / maintenance at the least.

Security Alarm System Repair
Like any technology, Security alarm systems can experience issues that require repairs.
Here are some common faults and how our technician’s generally addresses them:
- False Alarms: Alarms are triggered without an actual security breach, often caused by sensor malfunctions, environmental factors, or improper installation.
- Battery Failures: Wireless alarm systems rely on batteries, which can lose charge or fail over time. The batteries in wireless reed switches and PIR sensors generally last about 3-5 years. Backup batteries in alarm systems should be replaced every three years, or sooner if there has been an extended power outage.
- Connection Issues (Wired Systems): Faulty wiring can disrupt communication between the alarm control panel and sensors or other system components.
- Communication Failure (Monitoring Systems): Alarm systems connected to monitoring centres may lose communication due to network, phone line, or cellular issues. It is best practice to conduct regular tests with your alarm system to confirm it is still online and reporting to our monitoring centre. If you are unsure how to do this, please contact our service department to assist you with your particular setup and the testing procedure.
- Sensor Tampering or Malfunctions: The system might trigger tamper alerts due to the control panel or sensor covers being opened or damaged, causing them not to trigger the alarm.
- Control Panel or Keypad Malfunctions: The main control panel or keypad becomes unresponsive, preventing system operation.
- Power Supply Issues: The system may lose power due to issues with the main power supply, causing system downtime.
- Outdated Software or Firmware: System software may become outdated, leading to vulnerabilities or malfunctions.
- Siren or Bell Failure: The siren or alarm bell doesn’t sound when the system is triggered. This is very common, we recommend scheduled technician testing every 6 months for a Commercial property or every 12 months for a residential property based on the frequency of use to ensure both of these components are in working order.
Technician’s Approach
Diagnosis: Our security technicians use diagnostic tools to determine the root cause of the issue, such as checking for error codes, inspecting hardware, or testing connections.
Testing: They conduct a series of tests on system components (e.g., sensors, control panel) to ensure each is working properly.
Repair/Replacement: Based on the diagnosis, faulty components are either repaired or replaced.
System Reboot: After repairs, a reboot or reset of the system is generally required to verify that it is functioning correctly.
User Training: If necessary, our technicians may also guide you on proper system usage or maintenance to prevent future issues.
A well-maintained security system with regular check-ups can prevent many of these issues. Speak with the Eximm team today to schedule a service for your security alarm system.

- Door Release Mechanism Issues: The door doesn’t unlock when triggered through the intercom.
- Intermittent Functionality: The system works sporadically, with either audio, video, or unlocking failing sometimes.
- Interference or Noise: Background noise or interference in the audio or video signal.
- Wi-Fi or Network Connectivity Issues (for IP-based systems): Intercom system disconnecting from the network or slow performance.
- Intercom app issues: Not receiving intercom calls to a mobile phone
General Technician Process:
Inspection & Diagnosis: The technician will first assess the system, visually inspecting wiring, hardware, and testing audio and video feeds.
Testing Components: Technicians will test key components (power supply, camera, microphone, speakers, etc.) to identify faulty parts.
Repair & Replacement: Based on the diagnostics, the technician will repair damaged wiring or replace faulty parts.
System Reconfiguration: After repairs, the technician may update the software, reconfigure the network, and test all features to ensure smooth operation.
Final Testing: A thorough test of the system, including audio, video, door release functionality, and overall communication quality, ensures everything is working.
Each issue requires a methodical approach, ensuring that the problem is accurately identified and fixed to restore the system’s functionality.

- Faulty Wiring or Connections: Random system failures, intermittent access problems.
- Database or User Access Issues: Users may not be able to gain access due to permission issues, database errors, or incorrect card programming.
- Tampering or Security Breaches: Unauthorised access or attempts to bypass the system.
- Intermittent Functionality or System Freezing: The system operates sporadically or freezes entirely.
Preventive Maintenance
Our technicians recommend Regular maintenance of your Access Control System to prolong the lifespan of the devices. Maintenance can include the following:
- Testing all components periodically.
- Cleaning card readers and sensors.
- Checking wiring and connections.
- Ensuring the system firmware and software are up to date.
- Inspect electric locking hardware for correct operation. Clean and lubricate as needed.
By systematically diagnosing these issues, an access control system can be kept running smoothly with minimal downtime.

Security System Maintenance and Repairs FAQs
Do I need the Installer Master Code?
The Installer Master Code will provide our technicians quick access to your system to service. In the event you don’t have it, in order for our technicians to gain access to the system they will need to perform a full factory reset.
The system will revert to default settings removing all customised settings, such as zone configurations, user codes, and schedules.
The technician will then reprogram codes, IP addresses and any information for monitoring if you are a monitored client, and reconfigure any re-pairing with sensor devices if required to gain access to the panel and finally provide you with a new Master Code for future use.
What is an Installer Lockout Code?
There are some Security Companies that apply an installer lockout code on a system when it’s installed so that the customer can only return to them for servicing of the system.
If we attend site and discover this has been applied, we will unfortunately not be able to gain access to the panel to further assist you with this alarm system.
Are you able to service my security system brand?
There are a number of common installed security systems in the market. Eximm technicians have experience with most of these.
Please advise our team when contacting us of the brand and model of your system so we can confirm if this is within our range of products we service.
What would be considered End of LIfe for an Alarm System?
If your security system is wireless and around the 10year mark since installation, it is likely nearing end of life and whilst we may still be able to replace a part to fix the issue, quite often another can appear soon after which can be a costly multiple call-out process and parts replacement.
We recommend considering upgrading your system once close to this lifespan, taking a proactive approach to your security and safety rather then waiting for it to fail or worse yet, not knowing it’s failed until an unfortunate event occurs which we have experienced with many clients over the years. This would also be recommended to consider for a wired alarm system if it is between 15 – 20 years since installation.
Can you upgrade my existing alarm?
Upgrading your wired alarm system can be achieved in most cases by utilising your existing cabling and upgrading the hardware, minimising costs.
This will also provide you with access to the latest features by installing the latest generation of panels, including; mobile app monitoring, NBN compatibility and touch screen panels.
If you would like to discuss your current security system concerns with our team, we would be more than happy to discuss your options to achieve the most suitable outcome for you. Call: 1300 225 539Â or Email Us.
